Bass caught using a swim jig
Caught on the Keitech Model III Swim Jig in the shad color paired with an impact fat

The swim jig catches fish all year round. There are dozens of swim jig heads available on the market. I have tried a handful and keep coming back to these select few, the California swim jig, the Keitech model III swim jig and the Dirty jigs swim jig in both regular and finesse options.

I mostly use the finesse swim jig for the simple reason that it gets bit the most for me. The Dirty jigs finesse and the Keitech are my go to swim jigs. They are great for small mouth, large mouth, spotted bass, striper, crappie, trout and even the occasional catfish.

The swim jig is similar, to the chatter bait, spinner bait and crankbait. What sets it apart is its ability to impart secondary action. When paired correctly, you get the thumping of the trailer and the pulsing of the skirt as a result.

When I am throwing the the Dirty jigs Finesse Swim Jig I like to pair it with a Keitech Swing Impact Fat in a 3.8 or a 3.3 depending on the swim jig weight and hooks size. Currently I am trying out the rage swimmer in the 2.75 paired with a ¼ down to an 1/8 oz swim jig for a more finesse presentation now that it’s winter and having great success.

Most anglers fish the swim jig around shallow cover, but it is also effective deep bottom crawling around rock and road beds. With the above mentioned set up I have fished for and caught fish down to 50ft.

The swim jig is a worthy tool to have in your tackle arsenal. I have linked the images below to Tackle Warehouse should you be interested in having a closer look.

The Dirty Jigs Finesse Swim Jig

Dirty Jigs Finesse Swim Jig

This is one of my favorite swim jigs in the winter time, most of time actually. With a smaller profile and a lighter hook it's ideal for a smaller trailer. This compact profile catches big bass striper, crappie, trout and even cat fish. If you're not sure what's under the boat, tie one of these one. Go with the natural colors. I need it!

The Dirty Jigs California Swim Jig

With a heavy hook this jig is made to pull big fish out of heavy cover. It's available in many colors, but Personally I am partial to the natural shad colors, white and hematoma for stained water. Gotta have it!

The Keitech Model III Swim Jig

For a weedless presentation this Keitech swim jig is hard to beat. It pairs well with a Keitech 4.8 impact fat in a natural shad color. It goes through rock, wood, grass and lay downs with no trouble at all. Big hits typically come when it briefly hangs up and pops off. Want it?
