The under spin is a great rig to throw when the bass are chasing bait fish in the late summer/full transition, the flash of the blade makes your bait stand out from the mass of bait enhancing your odds of getting a bite.

Although it excels in the above mentioned scenarios, I have found that the under spin is a rig that you can use year round. Depending on the size of the swim bait you use, you can target multiple species. If you’re out fishing and your goal is to catch numbers and don’t care what species, down size the swim bait and prepare yourself for an awesome day on the water.
You can fish the under spin throughout the water column from subsurface down to thirty feet and beyond depending on the weight you are using. I typically use 1/8 to 3/8 oz if I’m fishing for multiple species and don’t fish it beyond 25-30ft. At that depth it takes some time to get to the bottom.

The under spin is an easy bait to fish, cast out and retrieve with intermittent pauses and pops. If your fish are at bottom, cast and let it sink to bottom and do a slow creep maintaining bottom contact.
It is important to match your bait to your hook appropriately and try to match the hatch goes without saying.
I use Keitech, Rage Swimmer and the occasional Basstrix swim baits in the 3.8 or 4.8 if I am chasing multiple species I down size to the 2.75 or the 3.0 I stay natural as far as colors go. I throw a lot of Blue Gill Flash and mix some Sexy Shad, Electric Shad and Pro Blue Red Pearl. If there's overcast, rolling clouds or if it's early sunrise or sunset I throw a Sight Flash which is basically white.

My go to under spins are, The Blade Runner, War Pig, Flashy Swimmer and although not perfect, Blakemore Casey's Classic Runner Heads. The Classic Runner is light wire and the hooks tend to bend out after a while, but it gets bit so I keep using it.

I use a spinning gear for this setup. A medium rod with a fast tip, you can use a medium heavy rod, but need to be careful not to rip the fishes lips. I always use braid to a fluorocarbon leader 20lb and 10lb respectively.
There’s many theories regarding fishing line, braid, mono, copolymer, fluorocarbon, Sinking, floating, stretch, which combinations for what fishing instances and so on, enough to make you a bit crazy. I like braid for its longevity and I like fluorocarbon for its invisibility. I TRY to adjust my fishing style when the combination is not optimal, for instance jerk bait fishing. It’s either adjust or carry dozens of rods with you.
